Avoidance of Bird Repellents by Mice

چکیده
-It is believed that mammalian chemosensory irritants are not aversive to birds and vice versa. Nevertheless, few avian repellents have been tested against mammals. For that reason, we evaluated the efficacy of 1.0% w/v methyl anthranilate, orthoaminoacetophenone, 2-amino-4',5'-methoxyacetophenone, 2-methoxyacetophenone, and veratryl amine as mouse repellents in 3-hr no-choice drinking tests. Relative to ingestion of plain water, all test substances significantly reduced (P < 0.05) intake. Orthoaminoacetophenone was the most effective repellent, with intake reduced to levels statistically indistinguishable from zero. Key Words--Chemical repellents, chemosensory, mice, Mus musculus, orthoaminoacetophenone.

Use of Deer Repellents to Preserve Wildlife Food Plots for Game Birds
Food plots are a vital element for the survival of game bird species such as bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) on Fort Riley Military Installation in Kansas. However, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) tend to eat the sorghum when it starts to ripen in September and continue feeding on it through November and December, often leaving no food for the quail during the winter. We conduct...
متن کاملChemical repellency in birds: relationship between chemical structure and avoidance response.
We examined how molecular structure of 24 anthranilate and benzoic acid derivatives correlated with drinking behavior in European starlings Sturnus vulgaris. The effectiveness of bird repellents was associated with basicity, the presence of an electron-donating group in resonance with an electron-withdrawing carboxylic group on a phenyl ring, and a heterocyclic ring in the same pi cloud plane a...
متن کاملPotential Repellents to Reduce Damage by Herbivores
Economic losses caused by herbivores and other species that inflict damage by browsing or gnawing are substantial. Because lethal approaches to damage reduction are not always practical or desirable, there is an increase in interest in the development of alternative, non-lethal technologies. Repellents may provide a feasible alternative. Here, we present recent studies of three repellent types:...
متن کاملA Preliminary Evaluation of Three Food Flavoring Compounds as Bird Repellents
There is an increasing demand in New Zealand for nonlethal bird repellents to protect food crops and prevent poisonous mammal baits being eaten by native birds. Three food flavorings, dimethyl anthranilate (DMA), methyl anthranilate (MA), and a peppermint extract (Optamint), were applied to wheat as surface coatings at different concentrations and then offered to individually caged house sparro...
متن کاملDevelopment of Seed Treatments to Control Blackbirds
Bird repellents to protect seeds are a potentially important aspect of integrated vertebrate pest management strategies. Yet, there currently are no repellents registered for seed treatment uses. This is due not to lack of effective candidate compounds, but to monetary and regulatory constraints that inhibit commercialization of promising compounds. Two examples of this dilemma are methiocarb a...
